SEPTEMBER 15 - OCTOBER 15, 2017 Issue

This issue focuses on the topic of sustainable architecture in the form of ‘green’ or ‘living buildings’ and features the NSBM Green University Town, an education complex set on 26 acres of lush terrain, designed by Engineering Consultants (ECL). A concept deeply rooted in our history is being revitalised to design buildings and environments that facilitate modern lifestyles while preserving the environment and protecting our planet. The project incorporates such concepts as natural ventilation and lighting, clean energy, outward beauty, and usage of various materials and techniques that are all in keeping with the principles of green architecture.

Also featured is a residence designed by architect Damith Premathilake. The concept of the design is modern with natural elements used to increase the energy efficiency of the house. Its interior and exterior spaces merge seamlessly. In the urban setting of the residence, in addition to landscaping within the property, the foliage of an adjacent plot has been assimilated into the design to create a green view.

This issue’s Feedback section features the ancient kingdom of Sitawaka. Despite numerous incursions and invaders striving to obliterate its existence, the legacy of this short-lived dominion survive in the structures that have withstood the passage of time.

Among the international articles presented is one from Domus Green by Paola Pierotti. ‘Complete Symbiosis’ studies the creative holiday homes designed by Peter Pichler in the Italian Dolomites and South Tyrol. Establishing a dialogue with the surroundings, the architect designed structures that are in harmony with the majestic peaks and peaceful valleys of the area.

‘Obama Presidential Center, Chicago’ is found in the Confetti section of the magazine. It explores the all-encompassing design of an environmentally-sustainable project integrating a museum, library and forum. It is an architectural expression translating the progressive ideas of the former Presidential couple into constructed form.
